Bunny and Butch watched in silence as the waiter held the door open and DI Vanya Coyne deftly manoeuvred herself and the St Bernard out the door and into the early morning pedestrian traffic.

“Shite,” said Bunny. “I was really hoping for a bit more information than that.”

“Bunny?”

“Although I suppose there was every chance she was still going to be mad at me.”

“Bunny?”

“I don’t know who else to try with— Ouch!” The “ouch” was because Butch had just bopped Bunny on the knuckle with her spoon. “What the hell was that for?”

In lieu of an answer, Butch nodded to where Vanya had dropped the £10 note on the table. Bunny pushed it aside and looked at the scrap of paper on which two names and addresses were written in narrow handwriting, identified in turn as being for Bobby Walsh’s brother and a woman identified as Sofia Accardi’s flatmate.

“Holy shit,” said Bunny. “She really is a hell of a lot smarter than I am.”
